Pagans in Padded Pews
Author: Daryl Wingerd

I recently overheard a conversation between two women. One was proudly describing an act of revenge she had taken against someone who had offended her. When she finished boasting of her clever wickedness, the other woman said, “Oh my! You’ll have to go to church for that one!”

We all know what she meant. Churchgoing is often seen as a way of appeasing God. But if you think about it, attending church for this reason isn’t much different than tossing a virgin into a volcano once a year

Preparing to Be an Amazing Old Man or Woman
Author: Jim Elliff

Like it or not, if you continue to live, you’ll get old. As you look around at all those ancient people in the grocery store, the golf course, the retirement village and the nursing home, don’t be smug—you’ll be there soon enough. It will do you well to prepare to make those years the best they can be for the glory of God.

Putting Love Top on Your List
Author: Jim Elliff

He was one of the most cantankerous men I had ever known. When all the church wished to move forward into a new area of ministry, you could count on him confronting the elders about it in a negative way. In fact, "negative" was his middle name.

Scoffer, Slacker, Seeker, or Saint? - A Spiritual Census for Teens
Author: Daryl Wingerd

Every ten years in America a survey called a census is taken to determine the current number of U.S. residents. Other information is also obtained and used to paint an up-to-date economic, political, and religious portrait of our society.

What if a census were taken in your church's youth group?

Seminary is Dangerous
Author: Steve Burchett

God used my time at seminary in profound ways. Doctrinal positions were established, ministry partnerships were forged, and a love for the local church was enflamed. If I had it to do all over again, I would go.

However, seminary is also a place where, if the students are not careful, bad things happen.

Seriousness In Children and Teens
Author: Jim Elliff

It is increasingly obvious that children and young people in many Teensevangelical churches are anything but serious about Christ. There are notable exceptions, but in many churches a cursory look at the behavioral signals put out by the young people reveal a profound disinterest.

Serving Preachers and Teachers of the Bible
Author: Steve Burchett

Pih is simply splendid… (He’s) not much of a preacher, but a quiet, unassuming man of moderate education, willing to do just anything. Always there, when there is any drudgery or hard work to be tackled, he seems to find a way out of every difficulty, making things easier for everybody. You don’t notice him much, but, like the boy’s definition of salt as ‘the thing that makes the porridge taste nasty when there isn’t any,’ he is the kind of man who makes things difficult for you, when you haven’t got him!

Sin, the Christian, and The Field-Goal Principle
Author: Daryl Wingerd

Christians have an opposing force seeking to defeat them—an enemy who is happy to score spiritual field-goals (rather than touchdowns) by tempting them to sin in little ways, even if he cannot always score in big ways.

The Benefits of Having Missionaries Visit Our Churches
Author: Steve Burchett

When missionaries visit our churches, we should encourage and care for them (see 3 John 5-8), but how does the church profit from the presence of missionaries?
